This isn’t Russia…is it Danny? All kidding aside, what in the wide, wide, wide world of sports is religion doing in alcohol drug rehabs and treatment centers? Last time I looked this was the 21st century, not the 2.1 century. Today, most rehabs still cling to the old idea that AA and the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is the only and best solution. And for many it is working wonders. The problem with mixing treatment centers and faith based AA is it gives the patient a good reason to hate and reject it. The vast majority of addicts and alcoholics do not want anything to do with God, at least not in the first few weeks of recovery. Looking for the right best rehab is like shopping for a new car. There are so many different kinds and variables. it can seem overwhelming. Start with the insurance. It may make it easy. The best treatment centers in the country have outgrown the old AA 12 step model. They focus on treating the whole person, holistically, for their personal issues which drive self medication. If you have ever been to an AA meeting or know someone who is a member, then you have probably heard about the 12 steps. They were written by Bill Wilson the man credited with founding Alcoholics Anonymous. AA was founded 75 years ago, in 1935.
And for 75 years drug and alcohol treatment centers have placed the 12 steps at the very core of their programs. 75 years is a long time and we have come to know more about the disease of alcoholism and addiction. It is time for more and more rehabs to provide more real treatment and put the 12 steps, where they below, as the best option for after treatment care. Non 12 step rehabs are ahead of their time.
