Ninety-nine percent of the drug alcohol treatment industry are based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. And, although it is “spirituality”, it is still based on God. There is no doubt the 12 steps are a very successful way to stay clean and sober. However, it does not seem politically correct to have a fatal disease, like alcoholism, treated with a heavy dose of religion. Non religious, non 12 step drug rehabs have seen the light. They know science and therapy are preferable to preaching God as the answer to their patient’s problems.

They were written by Bill Wilson the man credited with founding Alcoholics Anonymous. AA was founded 75 years ago, in 1935.
And for 75 years drug and alcohol treatment centers have placed the 12 steps at the very core of their programs. 75 years is a long time and we have come to know more about the disease of alcoholism and addiction. It is time for more and more rehabs to provide more real treatment and put the 12 steps, where they below, as the best option for after treatment care. Non 12 step rehabs are ahead of their time.

Bill Wilson, the man most credited with founding Alcoholics Anonymous, is considered to be the person most responsible for authoring the “12 steps”. Alcoholics Anonymous all by itself has saved more drunks than all the salvation army Christmas kettles put together. The thing is all the drug rehabs in the world latched onto the 12 steps as if it was the only thing someone had to do to recover from alcoholism and or drug addiction. And the truth is we know a lot more about these maladies today than we did 50 years ago. So, it is time the drug rehab business wakes up and starts treating their clients with the latest in research, if they care about how people find lasting recovery.

There is still no known cure for alcoholism. It is a progressive brain disorder. If someone really is an alcoholic, their only hope is a life of abstinence. Some people can simply quit, on their own. The vast majority of alcoholics need the support and active participation in what is known as alcohol recovery. Recovery from alcoholism usually starts with detox and rehab. After that, most alcoholics must resign themselves to actively working a program of recovery. Alcoholics Anonymous, despite its imperfections, has and is helping millions of alcoholics stay sober and live normal healthy lives, with needing or wanting a drink.

So what is all this talk about 12 step versus non 12 step rehab programs? Well, for as long as anyone can remember, the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 step model has been the basis of virtually all treatment centers. Their thinking was that treatment should be centered around what has proven to be the most effective tool in helping alcoholics and addicts stay clean and sober. And that has made sense for over fifty years of treatment and rehab. Recently, there is a movement a foot away from the old school and towards a new treatment model. This new treatment concept isn’t so much anti 12 steps as it is about offering a more therapy based treatment model which focuses its primary attention on helping to empower the afflicted person with therapeutic tools to understand their problems and deal with the underlying causes of self medicating them.
