Ninety-nine percent of the drug alcohol treatment industry are based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. And, although it is “spirituality”, it is still based on God. There is no doubt the 12 steps are a very successful way to stay clean and sober. However, it does not seem politically correct to have a fatal disease, like alcoholism, treated with a heavy dose of religion. Non religious, non 12 step drug rehabs have seen the light. They know science and therapy are preferable to preaching God as the answer to their patient’s problems.

The co-occurring psychiatric condition must be properly diagnosed and treated. Too many drug alcohol treatment centers treat the substance abuse as the primary problem. The psychiatric condition is what is primary. The drug alcohol abuse is what the person is using to self medicate the psychiatric problem. Which came first the chicken or the egg? The person must stop abusing drugs and alcohol, of course. However, the co-occurring problem must be properly and accurately diagnosed and treated, or the person will must assuredly have a very hard time staying clean and sober and away from their drugs of choice.

They were written by Bill Wilson the man credited with founding Alcoholics Anonymous. AA was founded 75 years ago, in 1935.
And for 75 years drug and alcohol treatment centers have placed the 12 steps at the very core of their programs. 75 years is a long time and we have come to know more about the disease of alcoholism and addiction. It is time for more and more rehabs to provide more real treatment and put the 12 steps, where they below, as the best option for after treatment care. Non 12 step rehabs are ahead of their time.

Not all alcohol rehabs and drug treatment centers are the same. And the truth is there is a wide range of drug rehab centers. The types of services and level of the quality of care can vary greatly. Like with any other important decision, it is a good idea to do a lot research. It is also smart to ask for input from experts who know all about the subject. The other big concern is funding. Medical insurance can cover some or all of the cost. However, it is a complicated issue and needs to be carefully addressed. So, before picking the right best alcohol treatment center, do the homework.

For those people who think stopping drinking alcohol, known as alcohol detox, is no big deal, do we have news for you. Not only is it difficult becasue your body starts to really crave a drink early on, it is also potentially dangerous. That’s right. Stopping drinking alcohol for some people can be fatal. No, I’m not kidding. Some people’s bodies react so violently to the sudden removal of alcohol, it goes into a severe reaction known as the Delirium Tremens, better known as the D. T’s. Once that event occurs, there is a 33% chance that person will die from it. If you are a regular heavy drinker, and you want to stop drinking, we encourage you to do so. And be smart about it and do it right, in a medical environment.
