Malibu, CA
Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, one of the leading alcohol treatment centers in the United States and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC.edu), today issued a public warning to all those setting themselves up for potential
failure by making New Year’s resolutions that involve the immediate cessation of smoking, drinking, drug abuse, etc., without proper medical guidance.

Dr. Mohammad said, “While the holiday season is typically a time for over-indulgence, ushering in the new year generally means that the over indulgent make a drastic effort to stop indulging cold turkey; there could be no greater recipe for failure and in some scenarios, significant health risk or death.” Mohammad added, “Whether you wish to stop smoking, drinking, eating or abusing drugs, you must have a well-planned, health-conscious strategy or the outcome will be disastrous under most circumstances. It is far safer and healthier to consult a medical professional when attempting to get control of addictive behaviors.”

Dr. Mohammad and his team will answer any questions and provide guidance to all those who submit addiction and behavior-related questions through the Malibu Horizon website. Mohammad added, “More often than not, people underestimate
their physical and emotional dependency on the various vices they attempt to curb by making yearly resolutions. If they are lucky, they will white-knuckle their cravings and find some degree of success; however, the vast majority will resume their addictive behaviors – while many run the risk of severe discomfort, severe mood swings, seizures, irreversible medical conditions and even death if not in the care of a qualified medical expert. Contact our team today and we will help you not only make and stick to healthy, realistic resolutions, but also will work with you to create the best possible you for 2012 and beyond.”

Dr. Akikur Mohammad, Founder of Malibu Horizon, one of the best rehab centers for alcohol treatment and alcohol detox in the country and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California (USC.edu), has never been afraid to speak his mind about the barriers keeping addiction medicine from moving forward and recently has been quite vocal about the limiting factors impacting effective alcohol detox and treatment. Beyond misinformation, Dr. Mohammad is deeply concerned by the fact that many highly effective medications used for alcohol treatment are not FDA indicated (off label), which means that the physicians are taking a risk by prescribing them. Since there are so few FDA indicated medications for treating alcohol detox, top addiction professionals are forced to prescribe ‘off label’ options, which can ultimately be used against the prescribing physicians by malpractice attorneys attempting
to discredit doctors.

Dr. Mohammad said, “Aside from the countless studies in the United States and Europe, which undoubtedly prove the effectiveness of certain medications for the exceptional treatment of alcohol detox and alcohol treatment through relapse prevention, it is considered is not just frustrating, but also makes it more difficult for us to provide alcohol abusers with the lifesaving medication they need.” Mohammad added, “For instance, Topiramate (Topamax) is an antiepileptic drug, or seizure medication; however, numerous studies have shown that Topiramate can and should be used for Alcohol Detox and Alcohol Treatment through relapse prevention, due to it effects on GABA and Glutamate receptors, which are unbalanced during Alcohol Detox and during abstinence. It’s not FDA indicated for Alcohol Treatment but Clinically we see significant
effects as shown in studies.”

Dr. Mohammad and his team will include this sensitive topic in their forthcoming series of ‘town hall’ meetings in an
effort to educate the public and encourage physicians to become more vocal about these unfortunate limitations. Mohammad added, “It is beyond unfortunate when the best possible medications for alcohol treatment aren’t indicated as
such by the FDA, which makes the process of treating this disease more difficult. While I understand the FDA’s need to set boundaries, there are more than enough conclusive studies regarding the ‘off label’ benefits of various
medications and the simple truth is, we can save more lives by using these medications but we need to work with the FDA to protect physicians from various legal pitfalls that emerge when working with non-FDA indicated medications.”

For anyone that has spent time in a detox center as a client knows that it is generally not a pleasant experience, at least for the first few days. First off, the goal is that the person enters a center or program on a volunteer basis; that way the level of motivation is higher than if being pressured by family or even being taken there by police.

The aim of a detox center is to help the client safely withdraw, or detoxify from a substance such as alcohol or opiates. There are both medical and non-medical detox programs. Some people need the medical support of doctors, medications in order to safely withdraw from the substance. For most, they can safely detox with the help of counselors, rest, nutrition, and encouragement.

With respect to alcohol, some people are chronic alcohol users, some go on a binge, drinking hard and heavy for a few days or longer; often not remembering some of those time periods. This is known as a blackout, the person has had so much alcohol that they will never recall what, where, when, or with whom events occurred. If a client has been to a detox center before and there are known medical issues such as alcohol induced seizures, which can occur a few hours or days after alcohol has been consumed, it is recommended the client be sent to a hospital to be medically cleared before returning to the detox center.

Some of the symptoms a client may experience when detoxing from alcohol are nausea, headache, diarrhea, shakiness, and dehydration. This is not a typical hangover that most of us have experienced from time to time. This is a physical and emotional dependence on alcohol, and even though it is making them sick, the urge to use again is more powerful than completely abstaining. Most people who have reached this stage of dependence are unable to quit on their own, and by going to a detox center they can learn about addiction from the counselors and look into their options such as treatment centers.

Other drugs such as opiates, crack cocaine, can be just as to withdraw from, sometimes even worse. The severity of any withdrawal is always dependent on the individual, taking into consideration issues such as age, length of using substances, amount, and lifestyle habits. Some symptoms that may be expected are extreme fatigue, body aches and cramping, mood swings, heavy sweating and dehydration.

If one is not sure what detox facility will best meet needs, checking with their family doctor or walk in clinic is suggested. Ask questions, and they (the counselor) will ask you questions; such as what your goals are, what and how long one has been using substances, and then a referral to the right kind of facility should be made.

Dual diagnosis is the drug rehab term for an individual who has a substance abuse problem and a psychiatric condition such as depression, anxiety, anger, bi-polar or ADD/ADHD. The reason this is so important is simple. Many people who are alcoholics and or drug addicts are using these substances to self soothe and self medicate themselves. Unless these underlying causes are properly identified and treated, the person will, in all probability, never achieve long term abstinence. This does raise the question of whether prescription medications should be used. As long as the person taking the meds is monitored for possible abuse, it is simply prescribed medication, for a legitimate medical condition. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is a great program, if it works for you. The ugly truth is it doesn’t work for the majority of people who try it. The problem with most drug rehabs who are married to the 12 steps of AA is the 12 steps are a religious based program. The other concern is it is not treatment. AA meetings are not therapy, even group therapy. They are a way for alcoholics to work together to stay sober. Making the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous the basis of a treatment center is becoming more and more outdated. Is it any wonder the success statistics for drug rehab are so pathetically low? They try and sell people on being powerless over their behavior rather than addressing their issues and teaching them to take responsibility for their lives and actions.

Ever since the federal judge ruled against the state of California, for requiring an atheist to complete a 12 step program. The judge’s ruling made it very clear. Someone, even a convict, has the right to decide whether they want a religious based drug rehab program, or not. Our question is, when will the average alcoholic or drug addict have the same right when it their time to go to rehab?

Deciding on which drug alcohol rehab treatment center is best can be quite a challenge. For one thing, the family is in a state of disarray and crisis, not a good time to be weighing and measuring a difficult decision. There is a page on this website, describing the basics of finding the best rehab facility. For the record, it is generally considered a good idea to start with any health insurance and go from there. Most people cannot afford to pay out of their pocket. These days, most insurance companies require the person try intensive outpatient therapy first before they will approve of a 30 day inpatient stay.

We are not sure why there isn;t some structured formalized rating system. Picking the right, best drug rehab is too important to leave to chance. I done some research and the best ones seem to be in various areas of the country. There is Malibu Horizon in Malibu, and there is Hazelden in Minnesota. There is always Betty Ford and Sierra Tucson. Up in the Northeast, I found Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut.

The numbers make it clear. The number one drug addiction problem isn’t marijuana, or heroin or crystal meth. The biggest drug abuse problem in this country is prescription medication. First in line are pain medications, opiates, followed by stimulants and benzodiazapines. Children are popping them like candy these days. The statistics are staggering. The government has tried to set up a system to monitor inappropriate activity. Guess what, most doctors don’t utilize it. There are only two reasons I can think of, why doctors are not fully on-board with Prescription Monitoring Program. They are either too lazy, or computer illiterate. Neither is very flattering.

It sounds like the drug rehab world is living in the dark ages. Ninety-nine percent of the drug alcohol treatment industry are based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. And, although it is “spirituality”, it is still based on God. There is no doubt the 12 steps are a very successful way to stay clean and sober. However, it does not seem politically correct to have a fatal disease, like alcoholism, treated with a heavy dose of religion. Non religious, non 12 step drug rehabs have seen the light. They know science and therapy are preferable to preaching God as the answer to their patient’s problems.
