Dual diagnosis treatment is a two edged sword

Dual diagnosis is a condition where a person has a mental disorder and a substance abuse and or alcohol problem occurring at the same time. The mental component can include depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, delusional disorder, and schizophrenia, among others. Treatment for substance abuse must include proper assessment for any possible mental conditions, if treatment is to be totally effective. Both conditions need to treated if the person is to achieve long term abstinence and recovery. Since the protocol for the treatment of certain mental diseases is pharmaceutical, this may cause certain conflicts for treating the substance abuse problem, especially of this person’s drug dependency was any form of prescription medication.
