Drug Alcohol Rehab Must Include Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis means someone has an alcohol and or chemical dependency and a psychiatric condition as well. The psychiatric condition can be anything like depression, bi polar, panic disorder, anxiety, ADHD and OCD. The co-occurring psychiatric condition must be properly diagnosed and treated. Too many drug alcohol treatment centers treat the substance abuse as the primary problem. The psychiatric condition is what is primary. The drug alcohol abuse is what the person is using to self medicate the psychiatric problem.  Which came first the chicken or the egg?  The person must stop abusing drugs and alcohol, of course. However, the co-occurring problem must be properly and accurately diagnosed and treated, or the person will must assuredly have a very hard time staying clean and sober and away from their drugs of choice.
